While it may be true that the shipyard phase currently accounts for just one to three percent of a vessel’s carbon footprint, that will change with the advent of fossil-free fuels. Amidst the energy transition, shipyards are gradually switching on to the need to implement more comprehensive sustainability solutions in their operations, business practices and yard infrastructures.There have been some high-profile developments in recent months. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/295" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fincantieri Yachts (Company)">Fincantieri</a> has announced a plan to install solar panels across five of its sites in Italy, generating a total of 10 megawatts to reduce energy draw on the national grid by 11GWh annually. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo</a> has installed solar panels at its Malta yard, a wind turbine at its Naples facility and aims to achieve full sustainability across its seven shipyards by 2030. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> in the Netherlands, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/681" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Marine (Company)">Monaco Marine</a> in France, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3255" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (Company)">Gold Coast City Marina &amp; Shipyard</a>in Australia are all assessing eco solutions from rainwater collection to wastewater treatment. However, harvesting renewable energy or paying more attention to recycling is only a fraction of what’s involved in greening a shipyard.Case study: The new-build yard &nbsp;With a workforce of over 3,000 employees across five sites, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> has a significant economic and industrial impact on the city of Plymouth in the UK. The company is taking its commitment to sustainability very seriously by re-assessing every facet of its operations with the aim of increasing efficiency and reducing costs, which makes for a compelling business case. Overseeing this sustainability drive is Laura Parry, who joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> in 2020 as Environmental &amp; Compliance Manager. Since then she has seen her role grow exponentially.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310000/image/large-1527d40e4e81c2d2905f4c4ee4346cc8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310000">“I started off as the sole person within the company with this focus, assisting the health &amp; safety department,” she says. “I now have an intern from the city’s university and two environmental sustainability business partners who work across all five sites.”That extra help is needed: the policies that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> is investing in and that Parry is overseeing are extensive, and potentially transformative for the business. It starts with ISO compliance, in particular standards 9001 (quality), 14001 (environmental management system) and 45001 (health &amp; safety). Standard 14001, especially, is about continual improvement, which is monitored internally but also audited annually by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd’s Register</a>. Coupled to this has been an investment by KPS Capital Partners, the American private equity company that became the new owners of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> in February 2023.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310002/image/large-67497365ffbc44949c7059c3b71c4ba4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310002">“The new &nbsp;shareholders are very keen on environmental sustainability and we have a good plan of action for 2024,” says Parry. “There is a clear focus on sustainability from the top, which really helps our cause.”In addition, a university PhD student is making a complete lifecycle assessment of one model line, literally deconstructing it to analyse every aspect of the construction from the nuts and bolts to energy waste.“Without that we could put our finger in the air and say we think our biggest impact is waste management, but the truth is we don’t know,” admits Parry. “What this LCA will do is point us in the right direction with qualitative and quantitative data. It’s already led us to tweak and change our operations.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258136/image/large-1a5b771835acfb06005cd285755181e3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258136">The end goal is to move the shipyard from a linear to a circular economy and address end-of-life issues, particularly as the yard builds in GRP, by working with its procurement team to go back to the roots of the supply chain.“That’s not only for our own good; it’s also supporting other people to be on that journey, because that’s how you inspire people, by taking them on the journey with you,” says Parry. “Working with your suppliers is really where it all starts.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310003/image/large-170fa1e30cbba074b8d52f3fb02f7dc3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310003">Managing infrastructure&nbsp;Tangibles that can be quickly addressed include reducing waste-to-landfill, shifting waste-to-energy partners from 50 kilometres away to a local plant, increasing recycling, sourcing eco-material alternatives and looking at how to reduce waste by using material off-cuts for other purposes. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> runs a digital waste dashboard that allows Parry to monitor positive or negative change in waste management and reduction.&nbsp;“For any company, it’s about working in collaboration with different departments,” she advises. “I might have the technical expertise, but without the support from the rest of the business we would not have seen the progress made so far.”These studies have led to some unexpected changes in best practice. The yard uses Crestomer structural adhesive extensively, for example, but then has to handle the responsible disposal of the packaging. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309998/image/large-708efe6fda18444b60cf35d6486c9292.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309998">“When we looked into the disposal compliance, because it’s hazardous waste, we discovered that the liners weren’t being properly squeezed out, which meant a considerable amount of wasted product,” Parry points out. “So by improving compliance we actually made financial savings. Those savings for a large boatbuilder can easily equal tens of thousands of euros just through recovered product.”Similar gains can be made in other areas. The company has undertaken remedial works to remove air leaks, which will deliver significant annual cost savings, and completion of the transition to LED lighting in all the production areas is expected to deliver a six-figure saving.&nbsp;“We’re also looking at a centralised compressor plant at one of our biggest sites to improve running and efficiency,” adds Parry. “It’s quite an investment in infrastructure, but it improves efficiency and will mean we become smarter in how we operate. We’re also adding photovoltaics to the sheds, and biomass heating was commissioned in 2022.”Case study: The refit yard&nbsp;Operating as a refit shipyard presents its own set of challenges, because you’re not working on vessels from raw material to finished product, or at least not with the same degree of control over the process that a new-build yard has. However, refit offers other opportunities to reshape the sustainability landscape across the industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261593/image/large-9a3563c54f6a32b0b53c0e0fd713e509.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261593">“Shipyards can do two things – one is what you are doing as a business, and the other is what you’re implementing on the assets you are working on,” says Txema Rubio, Commercial Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a>. “A new-build yard can choose the type of propulsion, the materials, et cetera. In refit it’s a completely different story, but we have an important role to play, because at the end of the day we’re receiving an asset and we’re being asked to improve it.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> was an early adopter of sustainability and has been proactive in sourcing solutions. For the yard element, installing solar panels on the shed roofs has been one aspect, but equally important is where the rest of their power comes from. Its Barcelona shipyard, for example, has an agreement with the energy provider that all its electricity comes from renewables, which ties in with new yard policies that all yachts in the yard must use shore power – running diesel generators is no longer allowed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310004/image/large-9a69ef2fe6ee15eb59947cc683e97d8d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310004">Similarly, yachts can only be painted on hardstanding, not afloat. Hardstanding is a much higher cost per day than berthing and that means telling clients that if they want to have a paint job at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> they will have to pay at the hardstand rate, not the berthing rate.&nbsp;“We lost a lot of clients in the beginning, but now clients understand why we have that policy,” says Rubio. “It means the yard has much more control over everything, from water treatment to prevention of leaks and spills, and it ties in to other yard infrastructure and machinery investments that contribute to reducing the environmental impact of every aspect of the yard and its operations.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261590/image/large-47d097ce0549707640f987792763b9e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261590">These measures include water treatment plants that treat everything, even rainwater, before it gets discharged, and Sea Bins that skim plastics and other debris from the harbour water before they can reach the open sea. When the new ship lift was built at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92 La Ciotat</a>, they received permission to use HVO in all the machinery, which means a 90 percent reduction in carbon emissions.&nbsp;When it comes to the business side, Rubio says there is a more fundamental driver than simply return on investment. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310005/image/large-750953a2d3d77376b37db5ef5052f61c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310005">“There’s no choice, we cannot not do it, so doing it quicker gives you an advantage and you are a leader,” he maintains. “Plus if we don’t take care of our playground, the sea, then we have nothing to sell to our clients. The amount of investment, the percentage of your revenue you apply to that, I think is different in each case. We’re investing a lot and we’re making business decisions because we truly believe it’s the future. And finally, as an industry, we need to get away from greenwashing.”Moreover, Laura Parry from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> believes it is important to look outwards as well as working from within the company.“I think it’s essential to work with as many groups and organisations as we can, because at the end of the day I want to be transparent – and if I can make savings within our organisation, why wouldn’t I want to share that with other organisations?” she asks. “Environmental sustainability shouldn’t be competitive; it should be about sharing ideas and best practice.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261589/image/large-844516863426db0a2dbcb00315568607.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261589">Financial incentivesThere is another element of policy at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> that delivers financial benefits and links to energy efficiency. The voluntary Climate Change Agreement (CCA) scheme, established in 2001 as part of the UK's overall commitment to reducing CO2, aims to make energy and carbon savings through energy efficiency targets whilst also helping maintain competitiveness by reducing energy costs in eligible industrial sectors.“Businesses pay a climate change levy, but there are potentially &nbsp;huge financial savings to be had by applying and committing to those agreements,” Parry explains.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23326/image/large-5be28ad1b004ce8702a6c6018867d752.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23326">There is a list of eligible activities that a company can review, and if a site represents 70 percent of that activity it can apply to for an agreement. In <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>’ case, it was surface engineering due to the laying up of the hulls and decks. They surveyed the sites and determined the relevant facts and figures, which were signed off by the Surface Engineering Association and then the Environment Agency, and the result is a reduction in tax. The financial impact can be considerable – well into six figures for businesses the size of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>.People powerLike at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>, Txema Rubio believes it is important to have someone within the company who is focused solely on the sustainability aspect and can support all departments. “That’s a real game-changer,” he says, “because it helps to have small initiatives at every single level of the company.”It extends beyond the obvious measures like increasing recycling to more advanced strategies for a circular economy. The yard’s procurement department together with a sustainability coordinator is checking what the industry can offer in terms of new interior materials, and it is inviting sub-contractors to find and promote new ideas and facilitate conversations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309999/image/large-3e762ac0105ee46b8ea7b680367ff8ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309999">It is also manifested in initiatives such as the group’s Refit for the Future service launched in April 2023, which aims to assist owners looking to reduce the environmental impacts of their yachts through the application of the latest tech to drive sustainability.&nbsp;“We explain to crews and owners more the concept of transition and that the sustainability path is not a one or a zero – there will never be the perfect final solution for an asset built 15 years ago,” Rubio says. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t improve things.”

The apartment style suite consists of two staterooms, twin bathrooms and dressing rooms, a gym, a pantry, two offices each with a fireplace, and a lounge area.&nbsp;There are twelve guest staterooms in total, making a total possible accommodation for thirty in the owner's party, although the eight guest staterooms on the main deck level combine into four exceptional VIPs. The overall design creates the feeling of a luxe coastal vibe, with details such as door trim and hallway railings repeating across each deck in various materials.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310519/image/large-d9acd8114706f2b79931e9c0f37038bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310519">The exterior of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Feadship 821</a> superyacht is characterised by a large beach club to the aft of the vessel with sweeping companionways leading down to her expansive swim platform.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310517/image/large-d646b3a8d949d2cc9bc8bca46407cbb1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310517">One of the biggest problems the team faced in building <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Feadship 821</a> would be developing a reasonable way to store compressed liquid hydrogen below deck at -253°C. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> invested in technology to make the transition away from fossil fuels, as when hydrogen is processed in a fuel cell, the only by-products are electricity and water in the form of steam.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310514/image/large-7928e6e601c8c856e4d7a763693038b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310514">To safely store hydrogen on a yacht, a vessel requires a double-walled cryogenic storage tank, which acts as a well-insulated cooling box in a dedicated room. Together, it takes eight to ten times more space to store hydrogen than the energy equivalent in diesel fuel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310493/image/large-c5c672622c4ef9da478ddfa5b83a6e70.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310493">In total, the cryogenic fuel tank onboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Feadship 821</a> is capable of holding 92 square-metres of hydrogen. Paired with their switchboard connection to the DC electrical grid, and the vent stacks for the escaping water vapour, this added an additional four-metres to the yacht’s original specifications.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310511/image/large-b0e5320ca135042f5d29eb260a8e9a32.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310511">Importantly, the fuel cells developed for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Project 821</a> can also use easier-to-store methanol, a liquid fuel in ambient conditions. Steam reforms methanol into hydrogen before the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell."We have now shown that cryogenic storage of liquified hydrogen in the interior of a superyacht is a viable solution. Future innovations on fuel cells and onboard reforming of methanol to hydrogen are on the near horizon,” added &nbsp;Jan-Bart Verkuyl.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310502/image/large-9823c6953ee01488b6c998c778fa97cd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310502">“For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, the bottom line is that the decarbonisation of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>'s upstream process, such as our extensive use of aluminium produced in a more environmentally sensitive way and the production of net-zero carbon-free fuels or hydrogen carriers deserves utmost priority."According to the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), 70-78 percent of a yacht's total energy use per year is to supply its hotel load, with heating and air conditioning making the largest demands. Although Project 821 cannot carry enough liquid hydrogen to power a crossing, it can generate enough electricity to serve her hotel load.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310497/image/large-a70bb9735da9eb1288b389d185e448e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310497">For longer travels or when pure hydrogen is not available, the electricity powering the 3,200 kW ABB pod drives comes from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> generators combusting HVO (Hydro-treated vegetable oil). The validity of powering the yacht's generators with HVO was tested and proven on the 2023 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10316" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Obsidian84.2m (276'3&quot;)Feadship2023">Obsidian</a>.&nbsp;In terms of storing energy, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Project 821</a> stores a mere 543 kW hours, as her fuel cell technology can provide an entire week's worth of silent operation at anchor or navigating emission-free at 10 knots.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310500/image/large-002417c095946baf0a990ed9a7c51799.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310500">She features <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>’s most efficient waste heat recovery system, which is capable of heating her pool, Jacuzzi and steam room, as well as the air temperature, towel bars and floors in the guest bathrooms. The Feadship superyacht Azteca has been relaunched earlier this week following an extensive two year rebuild and extension.


Like all Greeks, Nikolas Pateras has an inherent love for the sea, but his passion for seafaring goes beyond that of even his most water loving countrymen. Born into a seventh generation shipping family, Nikolas has been raised on the water, surrounded by yachts and vessels of all sizes. At the age of only 33 he acquired his first yacht, the 31.5-metre classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dama di Cuori31.5m (103'4&quot;)Benetti SpA1970">Moongoddess</a>, which sparked a lifetime's journey of yacht ownership that has seen him own eight yachts over the past twenty seven years. By the late 1800s, the familial business had grown from small wooden vessels to clipper ships and by 1902 they purchased the first steamship.A legacy of perseverance and determination, the family business has been through good years and tough times, losing all their ships in both World Wars. Nikolas first joined the company Pateras Brother Ltd, in 1986 at the age of 23, and since joining has managed 150 vessels. In 2015 he moved into the container ship market with Contships Management Inc. While cargo ships are his business, it is in yachts that Nikolas and his family get the most pleasure. “My father and uncle had boats from the early 1970s, and my uncle built a trawler with accommodation in the bow. I used to spend all my time onboard, working as crew at the age of 14-15 during the summer holidays learning the ropes. The lady I acquired her from even gave me the Hermes cigar humidor that was originally onboard, which I still have to this day. ”She was the first Adamas, the Greek word for Diamond”. His daughter Anastasia was born in 1996, the year he acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dama di Cuori31.5m (103'4&quot;)Benetti SpA1970">Moongoddess</a> but not long after Anastasia’s birth came a second child, and around the same time many of Nikolas’ friends were also building families and wanting to spend time onboard, so it was time to scale up.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104517/image/large-37f5a4e07f2627b50397023f38d0d22f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104517">Walking through Rotterdam airport one morning in 1998, Nikolas picked up an industry magazine and flicking through the pages, found a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a> advert for Azzam, which later became his <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Itoto61.0m (200'2&quot;)Dauphin Yachts1987">Adamas II</a> on the market for $16 million. The 59-metre yacht had an interesting history having been owned and built by the Emir of Abu Dhabi as an almost exact copy of the 61-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1435" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanoo61.0m (200'2&quot;)Feadship1979">Sanoo</a>. “She was an interesting size and had nice <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>-esque lines, so I called the broker and offered $8 million. He said that it was never going to happen, and that they had two American clients offering $14. But not long after I got a call back because the Americans would only take the yacht if she was delivered to the Med, and the owner was refusing to send the yacht through the Suez Canal, so whoever took delivery would have to do so in Abu Dhabi. I sent a few guys down there, and they looked her over, said she was in great condition so we put the offer back on the table. The Emir accepted and even left all the furnishings and cutlery onboard, as well as two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. It was my dream that the children would grow up sailing as I had, but while they loved being onboard, neither took to sailing particularly. Then one day in 2010 my captain called me and said that there was a man sitting on the dock staring at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3971" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gloria38.4m (125'12&quot;)Jongert Yachts1986">Gloria</a>. Nikolas explains, “Cecilia was in Mykonos with her husband and saw the boat and asked to come onboard. They loved the yacht and asked to buy her. I told them I was considering a faster yacht, but selling her was a big mistake. Despite acquiring two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> yachts over the course of eight years, the style of vessel wasn’t really for him. In 2017 while cruising <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2134" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Möbius38.0m (124'8&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa1996">Adamas III</a> in Corfu, Nikolas saw the 32.72-metre, black-hulled <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a> for the first time. Belonging then to Mr Nathaniel Rothschild and on the market for €4.5 million, Nikolas reached out to the broker to enquire if she could be bought for €2.5 million - the answer was a resounding no.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/118627/image/large-e4568cc43f0bc9b48a65b553238d11e3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/118627">A large beam for a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally</a> at nearly 8 metres and a large central cockpit, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a> is a high performance carbon yacht that also caters to liveaboard periods and the type of entertaining that Nikolas and his family enjoy aboard their yachts. A year after his first inquiry, Nikolas received a call from Mr Rothschild, who was about to launch the 73.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1596" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Planet Nine73.2m (240'2&quot;)Admiral2018">Planet Nine</a>, and was looking to sell <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a>. A deal was made and eventually Nikolas took ownership of the yacht, which at the time was in bad shape having been mostly unused for over a year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/42647/image/large-94351e4d5ae88a2de2e992836f00685e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/42647">“We brought the boat to Piraeus, did a huge amount of work on her, including painting her hull white replacing the sails and my children and wife fell in love with her. I even tried to sell her once or twice, but my wife threatened to shoot me if I sell the boat – in fact she is a wonderful yacht and we enjoy her a huge amount. Low maintenance, lovely lines that were futuristic at the time, but are now completely contemporary, and very seaworthy, we all enjoy cruising the Greek islands with her.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20360/image/large-6dc60a5d7e95e64bcd393c4c5e4da2d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20360">Nikolas’ most recent acquisition in 2023 is the 65.25-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a>, previously Yaakun, originally built for &nbsp;the Emir of Qatar as&nbsp;Al Menwar. An unusual yacht in regards to her configuration with all guest staterooms on the sundeck and a huge engine room and crew quarters Nikolas explains that part of his reason for this acquisition was that she was, at the time, the only reasonably priced 60 plus metre yacht on the market. She has since undergone a significant refit of over €5 million to bring her up to European standards under the supervision of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Giorgio Vafiadis</a>. “A very solid, large fast displacement yacht able to cruise at 21 knots, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a> had an unusual appeal to me and I knew after inspection that she had the potential to become a fantastic superyacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20361/image/large-88e6ae6154a3cc3b615ae7dc234a4011.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20361">While Nikolas enjoyed the yacht over the past summer, his eyes are once again set on the horizon and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a> may be soon placed in the market, freshly refitted and looking better than ever. With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a> the family favourite, Nikolas would like to build a 30-metre displacement yacht to cruise between the Greek islands and entertain friends, as he said, “Adamas VI will be the boat they bury me in!”&nbsp;Despite this assurance, it's hard to believe that after an extraordinary repertoire of eight superyachts behind him, Nikolas will be one to throw in the towel, so who knows how many Adamas we may see in the future. Over the past decade, Turkey has emerged as an increasingly attractive location for 30-metres plus superyacht refits among owners worldwide. This surge in popularity can be attributed to a number of things, such as the cost-effectiveness of its refit works, facilitated by historically lower labour costs and favourable foreign currency exchange rates.Furthermore, the appeal of Turkey is heightened by the saturation of many European refit yards each season, coupled with ongoing developments in Turkey’s marina infrastructure and the growing allure of its coastline as a travel destination.According to <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>, there was a significant upswing in the number of 30-metres-plus yachts undergoing refits from 2017 to 2021, from 18 superyachts undergoing refits in 2017 to an impressive 78 in 2021.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309766/image/large-3e0c00de0f58ad553ced3fd724d25575.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309766">Burak Nergiz from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2580" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="KRM Yacht Refit & Repair (Company)">KRM</a> explained that the significant transformation observed in the Turkish refit sector over the past decade can be attributed to the development of refit infrastructure and a strategic shift in refit approach, enabling an increased capacity for yachts. Nergiz notes that “before 2010, many refit yards were part of shipyard manufacturers, and there was no dedicated company solely focused on refits until the establishment of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2580" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="KRM Yacht Refit & Repair (Company)">KRM</a>.” Moreover, in 2018, as evidence of the growing demand for refits, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2580" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="KRM Yacht Refit & Repair (Company)">KRM</a> expanded its capabilities by acquiring a 300-ton travel lift, thereby enhancing the capacity for refitting yachts up to 45-metres in size.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/290001/image/large-4b7e41140270bcdfb299e428802d1bd3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/290001">Despite the growth up to 2021, the years 2022 and 2023, witnessed a reduction in refit activities within the Turkish superyacht market. Nevertheless, Turkey appears to have retained its substantial global market presence, constituting approximately 5% of the total number of vessels undergoing refit operations compared to 13% in France and 14% in Spain.The decrease in the number of yachts frequenting Turkey for refit can be attributed to a combination of reasons. These range from the deterioration of financial conditions in Turkey to a considerable increase in the number of superyachts undergoing refits in previous years, along with a rise in new-build projects that has resulted in a lack of space for new refit projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289999/image/large-49c974f4ef421f68ce3035431b7181d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289999">According to the Associated Press, the Turkish economy is grappling with a currency crisis and soaring inflation, significantly affecting labour wages and the prices of raw materials. Ersun Sengun founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7431" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mono Yachting (Company)">Mono Yachting</a>, a full yacht services agency based in Bodrum, has undertaken numerous projects over the years and is currently working on the refit of the 49-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2339" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MMM49.0m (160'9&quot;)Amels1993">MMM</a>. He confirms the economic impact on the yacht sector, affirming: “due to inflation, the minimum salary for workers has increased unbelievably from 2,500 to 11,500 Lira in three years, and now we are expecting to see it rise to approximately 17,500 Lira this year, representing a substantial 600% increase from the initial 2,500 Lira.” This is noteworthy, as the cost of refitting a yacht 30-metres plus in Turkey has now become comparable to that in France, Italy, and Spain. Ersun highlights this shift by recounting a conversation with a superyacht captain who informed him, “the cost of the refit is now almost the same as Palma.” But despite the increase in price, the “captain was still adamant about carrying out the refit in Turkey due to our craftsmanship and attention to detail”. Ersun further emphasised that in Palma, “where many yachts are stacked on top of each other, there is a lack of focus and attention to detail, unlike the work carried out in Turkey.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289998/image/large-ee8dc32e950f13db1d1bf4a5f7ee566f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289998">Regarding the impact of inflation on the sector, Bogdan Gusarev, Sales Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bering Yachts (Company)">Bering Yachts</a>, notes, "Turkey has a different approach to inflation compared to people in Europe. While sudden inflation spikes of 10 percent may cause panic elsewhere, Turkey, being more accustomed to inflation has adapted to this economic reality and found effective coping mechanisms. This isn't a new challenge for them, having dealt with ongoing issues even before the impact of Covid. Consequently, this trend is likely to persist. I believe Europe is currently grappling with more severe challenges in terms of pricing and a shortage of skilled labour.”Aside from the economic impact on the Turkish refit market, another factor contributing to the decline in the number of refit projects is the upsurge in new-build yachts, leading to a shortage of available space for refit endeavours. Berkay Yilmaz, Commercial Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin Yachts</a> commented: “While we acknowledge the growing demand for new-builds, it's important to highlight that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin Yachts</a> is currently dedicated to the maintenance and refit of our existing projects, which encompasses both new builds and refit assignments. At present, we are unable to accept external refit projects”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289997/image/large-ce2eb361eb72d5bfe3360e04f2dec97c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289997">Moreover, Aleksandra Podlipna, Megayacht Technical Manager of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5160" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="West Istanbul Marina (Company)">West Istanbul Marina</a>, who is working on the refit project of a 67-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, further confirms this stating that: “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> expanded the size of their vessels. Previously, they constructed yachts ranging from 35 to 50 metres, but now they are working on yachts as large as 80-metres. As a result, their facilities are occupied with new building projects. Moreover, this trend is also evident with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a>, as they have also increased the size of their in-build yachts. This heightened demand has created constraints on both manpower and facility space for other refit projects”.An analysis of <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>'s data on the number of new yacht sales further substantiates Ersun’s and Podlipna’s observations, revealing a notable increase in new-build projects within the region. In 2023 there were 21 new yacht sales and 30 in 2022, a substantial rise from 16 in 2020.Furthermore, Bogdan provided insight, stating, ”I can confirm that major projects are currently underway in Turkey, not merely in the conceptual phase but in the construction stage. These projects surpass the 30-metre range. Specifically, I'm monitoring numerous developments within the Antalya Free Zone, where multiple projects of 40-metres plus are actively under construction.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289995/image/large-f81ff82958c786d1d9aff2945420fd38.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289995">Oguz Bilgin, sales manager at TransDiesel, a company that distributes John Deere Power Systems in Turkey, highlighted an interesting development, where many commercial shipyards are transitioning into the superyacht sector, particularly in the refit aspect. He highlighted that Tersan Shipyard has opened a superyacht refit division called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7461" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tersan Marine (Company)">Tersan Marine</a>, with a large refit area in development covering a total of 200,000 square-metres in Oren, Turkey. After a brief conversation with Fatih Çelik, the Refit and Boatyard Manager Of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7461" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tersan Marine (Company)">Tersan Marine</a> confirmed this development and affirmed that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7461" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tersan Marine (Company)">Tersan Marine</a>’s facilities in Oren aims to make standard maintenance and refit works for superyachts. Whilst the work is still in progress, the facility recently unveiled an 820-ton travel lift and can accommodate superyachts up to 65-metres in the drydock area. The establishment of this facility, in cooperation with the Turkish government has created a refit ecosystem, attracting various nautical supply chain companies to the area.Regarding the future impact on the Turkish refit market and the Turkish superyacht sector as a whole, Bogdan highlighted that there are challenges with many skilled labourers moving to Europe or other destinations due to uncertainties. However, he acknowledges that this is a temporary period. “It is now imperative for companies to provide incentives to retain qualified personnel''. While the London-based design firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a> may be best known for its work within the Turkish superyacht sector, having designed more than 30 yachts in the region, the company’s canon is varied in both design style and yacht type. Led by the inimitable Jonny Horsfield, whose frank, straight talking attitude has led to many close relationships with builders and clients, the studio is home to a deep level of expertise, with a team that specialise in some of the most detailed work found in the global fleet. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308201/image/large-7f656666f3ac42ed60e82c2ef71ff971.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308201">A automotive designer by training, Jonny found his place in yacht design in the late 80s somewhat by chance, cutting his teeth under Martin Francis – designer of the highly recognisable superyachts <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A 119.0m (390'5&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH2008">Motor Yacht A</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Odyssey123.2m (404'2&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2015">Golden Odyssey</a>&nbsp;and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/901" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zeus74.5m (244'5&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH1991">ECO&nbsp;</a>(to name a few). Returning to London in the early-90s, he joined the team at Donald Starkey, alongside Pascale Reymond and Andy Langton, future founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/56" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reymond Langton Design Ltd. (Company)">Reymond Langton Design</a>. Under Starkey, Jonny specialised in interior design, and he describes those years as “the best years of learning for my career.”When Starkey let the team go during the 1993 recession, Jonny and Steve Howard, another of Starkey’s team, decided to go it alone, utilising their experience and contacts gained under Don to pick up work within the Turkish refit market. Officially coining the company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a> (Horsfield and Howard being the two Hs), <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">Yachting Partners International</a> became a major advocate for the brand’s early success and the refit work was considerable. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/77954/image/large-842bee5b9290948276598155fd15d277.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77954">“It was a different refit market back then, quick and somewhat dirty, but we learned a lot about costs, budgeting and about how to keep the client happy. The issue was that we really weren’t building a reputation in the new-build sector so changing that perspective took a lot of work.” By 2006 however, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> landed its first new-build with the interior of Talisman C, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/373" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Talisman Maiton54.2m (177'10&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2006">Talisman Maiton</a>, at Proteksan, the shipyard that went on to become <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a>. That first build set the ball rolling for new-builds and also forged a hugely successful relationship with the shipyard. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> has now launched 10 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> yachts, with two more currently in-build.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280772/image/large-6a60d2ad84d85ed0a07b797a98158dc2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280772">While Turkish yachts are only part of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> story, they do make up nearly half of the studio’s portfolio and in some ways Jonny has taken some negative heat over the years for the interior styling of a number of the yachts. The recent launch of the 80-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>, which made it onto the cover of a number of publications and garnered millions of views on social media, is an example of one yacht that, while divisive, demonstrates <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2’</a>s capabilities when it comes to bespoke superyacht interiors.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280861/image/large-4fdcc27bcbf5b4f9f516e9fde5e7b11d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280861"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280792/image/large-6a058140153c6376373dfa183966f71c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280792">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>’s interior is not my style, it's not representative necessarily of the studio’s style, but it also isn’t the role of a yacht designer to force their own style on a client. We never expected <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a> to be for sale and certainly didn’t expect her to attend a yacht show. For everyone that likes the boat, there is someone that hates it, but it was made for a client who had a very clear vision and it is that vision that we succeeded in creating, which I am proud of.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308206/image/large-38f1f816e359a30c413d3090aca6893e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308206">While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>, and somewhat the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jewels53.0m (173'11&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2023">Jewels</a> launched in 2022, are at one end of the spectrum, other Turkish yachts have also raised the bar for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> and its global positioning. One example of this is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>’s sistership <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> launched in 2020, for which Jonny received a number of plaudits. A contemporary, modern and fresh style, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a>’s interiors have been widely acclaimed, with many new and international clients coming to the studio on the back of her success. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vento87.0m (285'5&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2024">Vento</a>, the 87-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> due to launch later this year, is set to exhibit yet another of the studio’s capabilities, and will be an interesting yacht to see. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308209/image/large-ec49ff618eec8cfda55c4124a2a08c77.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308209">When it comes to his favourite yachts in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> portfolio, the stand out for Jonny today is the 74.98-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a>, launched in 2020 and hailed as the yacht to see at last year’s boat show in Palm Beach. “If you’d asked me a few years ago I would have said the 123-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5968" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Lusail123.0m (403'7&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Al Lusail&nbsp;</a>(exterior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>), but seeing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> at Palm Beach, I was really blown away. I’d not seen the yacht outside of the yard, and while she has a fairly standard profile in terms of lines, the detailing in her proportions are lovely and something I am really proud of.” &nbsp;A knock-out at the show, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> sold during the event, with allegedly as many as 25 millionaires stepping onboard during the course of the week, which is a testament to her design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261070/image/large-877f2ec3b1bec6c03a535c35842aad10.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261070"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5968" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Lusail123.0m (403'7&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Al Lusail</a>, one of the largest in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s canon, is far more radical in her exterior lines, with interconnecting arches throughout her superstructure. Comparing the two boats Jonny explains, “when you look at her you think, that is a spaceship, but in a way her exterior was easier to design, because the brief was ‘do whatever you want, go wild’. Whereas for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> the brief was very particular and fairly conservative and that restriction can be challenging. In a way I am more proud of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> and the way we created this ultra-modern and sleek yacht within more traditional proportions.”&nbsp;While talking about large yachts, it's impossible to not to mention <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV Ocean</a>, which is due to be the largest yacht in the world when launched in 2026. Now expected to be around 195-metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a> has been through some highly publicised delays and developments, but despite the broad exposure, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s has gone somewhat unmentioned. Involved in the project from a very early point, the owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a>, the Norwegian businessman Kjell Inge Røkke, first saw <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s work onboard the 107.4-metre Ulysses (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andromeda107.4m (352'4&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2016">Andromeda</a>) at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/13" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2018">Monaco Yacht Show 2018</a>. “He didn’t necessarily like the interior of Ulysses, but Kjell admired what we had done at a commercial shipyard, using cruise ship technology and a tight budget, to create a superyacht finish and so we were commissioned to create the interiors of REV.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308208/image/large-f0eaa1a977e141fe4c590f8d017fa765.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308208"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308207/image/large-9548aa44296343ae53a771e521687c0c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308207">With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a>’s construction now back underway, Jonny and the team have kicked back into gear, digging out the drawings and revising the interiors, where possible, to align with the new exterior. Kept tightly under wraps, Jonny describes her interiors as “minimal and quite industrial, almost like an apartment in regards to the architecture and aesthetic, with features such as perforated metal doors. It was a really enjoyable project to work on and I’m looking forward to getting stuck back into it over the coming months.”&nbsp;While its portfolio is broad, and Jonny remains firm on the stance that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> does not have a house style, when pushed he does infer that the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> is most closely aligned with his own stylistic taste. “I would say that ‘house style’ changes over time and develops with the market. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> has been a really great project for us and we have seen a lot of demand for the modern and neutral aesthetic – you will recognise it to an extent in Al Reem which is due for launch this year.
